I have been working on a way for trucks, carrying weight loads permissible on our state roads, access to our interstate system.  We on Senate Transportation think we have come up with a solution by changing our fine structure, since the state not the federal government, has jurisdiction over fines. This is a long- standing concern for towns all along Interstate 91.

As a Vice Chair of Appropriations I have been spending much of my time on tracking the federal stimulus legislation and working with our Congressional Delegation to assure the maximum benefit to Vermont and to assure ways of providing the accountability that is so important. Even with the stimulus package the FY 2010 Budget will require some tough decisions with an estimated $30 million gap between revenues and base spending.

Health Care Reform with the passage of the stimulus package should soon be receiving considerable attention by Congress. Vermont's efforts align very well with the federal discussion. Rep. Steve Maier and I co-chair of the Health Care Reform Commission and we have had the opportunity to meet with lead health care staff from US Senator Baucus' office to talk about his health care reform proposal. It is expected that Sen. Baucus and Sen. Kennedy will be taking the lead on any federal legislation.
